everyone covers themselves in mud and then rinses it off in the very salty water. the combination makes your skin so soft for weeks and is supposed to clear up any skin problems

First Images of Amman

View of Amman--sometimes referred to as the "San Francisco of the Middle East" because of its characteristic steep hills. Downtown there is also a historical Roman amphitheatre.












Power Hut--the gym! Just like a gym back home












Crossing the street is an experience. Traffic rules and pedestrian crossings are not enforced, but somehow it all seems to work. Jordanians are completely comfortable with crossing six lanes of oncoming traffic in a few seconds. In this picture we lost a Fulbrighter unaccustomed to traffic when we en masse crossed the street, accidentally leaving her behind! We later crossed again to pick her up...we all will definitely need to improve our street-crossing skills this year.







Special sweets just for the month of Ramadan. Though arriving here right in the middle of Ramadan is an adjustment (no drinking water in public, no food during the day, all the restaurants are closed until after 7...all things a little more tricky when compounded with jet lag), the breaking of the fast "iftar" is great. There is a sense of community and people are more wholesome and pious for the month-long holiday.
